Welcome to Advanced Poetry!

This semester course is for senior Creative Writing students interested in studying the art of poetry and writing original poetry. An open mind and supportive attitude will be essential as we workshop each other’s poems. We will be exploring several approaches to the art of writing poetry through a variety of different exercises to generate poems in open and closed forms.

As promised in class on Wednesday, here is what I would like you to do for Friday: 

1. Finish reading the article provided: Poetry as a Basic Human Need. 
2. Consider whether poetry is of any use in this world and whether or not you agree it is a basic human need. 
3. Write 1-2 well-developed paragraphs about your perspective on the topic. 
4. Be prepared to discuss your opinions/views. (Without a rich discussion, you will be asked to take more quizzes.)
